Upscale Dining on Eleuthera at the French Leave Resort

Just a short flight from Nassau, Eleuthera is a small outer island in the archipelago of the Bahamas. With miles of pink sand beaches and a relatively small number of hotels, this underdeveloped tropical destination is the ideal place to get away from it all. A lot has changed since our last visit to the island, including the addition of a new boutique hotel. The French Leave Resort is currently only one three Autograph Collection Hotels in the Caribbean.

Eleuthera is not known for being a culinary destination. In fact, due to the lack of restaurants, we tend to stay in and cook most of our meals at our rental house. We were thrilled to learn that the French Leave Resort is home to a trendy new eatery, 1648 An Island Restaurant. Overlooking the marina, with picturesque views, we can see why both locals and visitors are flocking to this swanky new hotspot.

The Restaurant

Perched high above the waterfront, the restaurant’s deck is the ideal spot for a meal with friends. The outdoor space is a contemporary mix of whitewashed wood, seashell fossil floor tiles, and modern patio seating. Piped in Caribbean music plays softly in the background contributing to the laid back vacation vibe. It is the kind of space you’ll likely hang out at for a while.

If you must, you can sit indoors. The restaurant’s small dining room has comfortable cream-colored banquettes and turquoise accents complementing the colors of the Caribbean Sea. This chic space is both tranquil and serene.

The Drinks

The staff is polite and friendly. However, knowing that the Bahamas runs on island time, we ordered several tropical drinks while waiting for our meal. The bartenders pour fantastic rum-based cocktails such as the Bahama Mama or Pain Killer. There is also a nice selection wine by the glass or if you are parched try a local beer like Kalik.

The Food

The menu boasts plenty fresh Bahamian seafood. Fish makes its way onto almost every plate. For starters, try the lobster salad in a creamy lime dressing or the coconut cracked conch. For my main dish, I choose the Pan Seared Ahi Tuna Sandwich topped with grilled pineapple. I highly recommend it. Other fresh-from-the-water options include Fish Tacos or the Grouper Wrap served with mango coleslaw. Land lovers will enjoy the 1648 burger or pizzas with eclectic toppings like truffle mushroom or jerk chicken.

While it is a bit pricey, the food is best we’ve had on the island so far. I’d suggest enjoying a long leisurely lunch in the middle of the day at 1648, especially if you are not comfortable driving at night on Eleuthera’s unlit roads.
